Rising Damp Treatment

The Rising Menace

There are many types of damp to be found in a given property, but one of the more common is rising damp. This can be caused through a variety of means, such as:

  • Failed or non existent DPC (Damp Proof Course)
  • Ground level existing above the current DPC (Breached)
  • Leaking or overflowing pipes and gutters
  • Pooling water externally

Essentially, if a DPC hasn’t been put in, or moisture is able to travel freely around or above it, you may be exposed to rising damp! Imagine the Earth as a ball of water and every house a sponge on the surface, soaking it up. Without a physical barrier, it will rise up into your house!

More scientifically, the process of hydrostatic water pressure traveling via hydroscopic capillaries in building substrate is what we commonly refer to as the process of rising damp. Most walls and floors allow some water in, but it’s usually stopped from causing damage by a barrier called a damp-proof course (DPC) or damp-proof membrane (DPM), one applied in the external brickwork and the other to internal walls. Residue salts left behind from rising damp contaminates the finish on the walls causing it to flake and crystallise.

Our method of treatment involves removing any damaged material and in the affected areas back to brickwork and apply a physical barrier, the DPM, as well as the external injections directly into brickwork, the DPC. We can take care of reinstalling any plasterwork or finishes while we’re there!

Our powerful MMS2 Protometer is instrumental and accurate in determining the different types of damp too and is one of the most effective tools at our disposal.
